Kirti P. Patel, MPS, MPH, CCP, LP, MT(ASCP), was honored as the 2013 American Society of Extracorporeal Technology (AmSECT) Perfusionist of the Year. The annual award, sponsored by Medtronic, includes a $1,000 check and is presented to an AmSECT perfusionist who demonstrates perfusion excellence through significant contributions to the field of extracorporeal technology.
Kirti Patel has worked for several cardiovascular programs including the Texas Heart Institute, Medical University of South Carolina, Memorial Hermann Baptist Hospital and, more recently, Memorial Hermann Hospital. Patel was recently appointed Program Director for the University of Texas in Houston’s Cardiovascular Perfusion School, which will open in the fall of 2014 and will add to his already busy schedule. An active member of AmSECT, Patel has been the editor-in-chief of AmSECT Today since 2005. He is proud of the many perfusion activities and education initiatives with which he is involved. “I stay active in my profession because I enjoy it and it’s my passion. It’s a responsibility that I don’t take lightly,” Patel said.
“I’ve been nominated before for this award and am humbled to receive it this time. The nomination itself was an honor. To know that your peers respect you and see value in your work is very uplifting. While other recipients have achieved excellence through publishing or research, I’ve tried to be well rounded — focusing on different areas of experience.”
AmSECT President David C. Fitzgerald, BS, CCP, Chief of Cardiovascular Perfusion, INOVA Heart and Vascular Institute, Fairfax, VA, commented while presenting the award that “When a person can mentor others, they magnify their own excellence by helping those around them become excellent. The influence Kirti has on other perfusionists is tremendous. As an instructor in the Texas Heart perfusion program, he contributes his time and experience to help other perfusionists advance their careers. And next year, as the program’s director, he’ll have the opportunity to make an even larger contribution to our profession.
“As the AmSECT Board of Directors reviewed the nominations, Kirti’s passion jumped out at us right away. He’s been a contributing author and member of AmSECT Today, becoming editor by creating a quality magazine that helps perfusionists around the world keep current on perfusion technology. He inspires others to become contributing authors. When we evaluated his contributions and the positive mark he has made on the profession, we knew that Kirti personified what the perfusionist-of-the-year award is all about.”
“Medtronic is proud to be a sponsor of this award,” said Denise Steinbring, Senior Director of Marketing, Medical Education and Field Service, Medtronic Extracorporeal Therapies. “It recognizes outstanding performance and contributions to perfusion technology, a goal that embodies Medtronic’s commitment to deliver innovative perfusion solutions through collaboration with perfusionists and other extracorporeal clinicians.”
