Mark E. Stinson, M.D.

Dr. Mark Stinson, ’87, was a leader among leaders. He died prematurely in 2007.

The Mark Edward Stinson, M.D., Global Health Student Assistance Fund has been established in his honor at McGovern Medical School. The goal of the fund is to provide travel assistance to students who wish to provide international medical care, provide scholarships for students interested in a career in global health, and to support medical students with an interest in public health/informatics training.

His commitment to global health was fostered while a student at McGovern Medical School. During that time he created initiatives to support international health development. They included an Annual Symposia on International Health, developing electives in international health for medical students, volunteering for relief efforts, and participating in school sponsored exchange programs including the School’s Delegation to China.

After graduation from medical school he obtained formal public health training at The University of Texas School of Public Health and subsequently learned applied informatics to support international relief efforts.

He completed Family Practice Residency at Merrithew Memorial Hospital where he joined the faculty at UC Davis and continued to educate medical students and residents. He became an international leader in emergency medicine responsiveness and later founded Medicine International.
