On Thursday, March 25th, the Department of Anesthesiology had the great honor of hosting John Zerwas, MD, for the morning. Dr. Zerwas gave an encouraging presentation entitled, “COVID-19: The Pandemic Response as a Strike Force” during a combined Grand Rounds with the Department of Surgery. During his talk, he provided an update on the COVID-19 response in the state and his personal involvement in advising Governor Greg Abbott on best practices for managing the pandemic and vaccine rollout to Texans. After Grand Rounds, Dr. Zerwas joined residents and physicians in the OR where he assisted with the anesthesia care for a patient undergoing a partial nephrectomy. Following the procedure, he met with faculty, residents, students, and other members of the department to discuss ways in which we can further our mission as leaders in the field of anesthesia.

Dr. Zerwas currently serves as Executive Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs for The University of Texas System. He is also a member of Governor Abbott’s Strike Force panel where he advises government officials on major public health issues concerning the state. Previously, he was a member of the Texas House of Representatives (District 28). We would like to thank Dr. Zerwas wholeheartedly for the time he spent with us. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit with him, and all of the wisdom and depth of experience he shared.
