Office of Continuing Medical Education LogoMcGovern Medical School has launched a new Office of Continuing Medical Education (CME) after receiving accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).

The office is an annual requirement for state licensing, as well as board certification, and will provide CME credit to faculty physicians through the medical school and beyond.

Previously a joint providership between McGovern Medical School and Baylor College of Medicine, the CME office will transition to the Office of Continuing Medical Education at McGovern Medical School in March 2022. Beneficiaries of the office’s CME events include McGovern Medical School faculty, residents, students, and other health care workers.

“Our goals are to expand the number and accessibility of events within our institution,” said Zi Yang Jiang, MD, chair of the Continuing Medical Education Committee. “We want to increase interdepartmental attendance and collaboration for events. We also hope to work with our data team at UT Physicians to allow clinical trends and predictions to drive the selection of education topics.”

Over the course of a year, the Committee on Continuing Medical Education, gathered activity and learner data from previous years to formalize an organization structure and apply to the ACCME. Following a site visit and a request for more information phase, the office received its accreditation on July 26, 2021.

“Accreditation means that we have the freedom and initiative to create learning events that are tailored to our learners’ specific needs,” Jiang said.

The Committee on Continuing Medical Education is led by Jiang; James Kellam, MD, director; and Vaccaro Greaves, executive services administrator. Kellam has historically worked in collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine, while Greaves is leading the administrative efforts for all departments of the Medical School during the transition period.
