Anthony Estrera, MD

Anthony Estrera, MD, professor and Hazim J. Safi, MD, Distinguished Chair in Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, has been elected to the Board of Directors for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). His term as director-at-large runs from 2022-25.

Founded in 1964, the STS is a not-for-profit organization representing more than 7,600 surgeons, researchers, and allied health care professionals worldwide who are dedicated to ensuring the best possible outcomes for surgeries of the heart, lungs, and esophagus, as well as other surgical procedures within the chest.

The STS is responsible for creating the STS National Database for cardiac surgery which is the largest and longest running cardiac surgery quality initiative. The STS National Database was established in 1989 as an initiative for quality improvement and patient safety among cardiothoracic surgeons. The database has four components – adult cardiac, general thoracic, congenital heart surgery, and the interagency registry for mechanical assisted circulatory support (INTERMACS) database. Estrera joined the faculty at McGovern Medical School in 2000 and became chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery in 2020. He is 2022 president-elect for the Texas Surgical Society and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, the DeBakey International Surgical Society, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.
