Office of Diversity and Inclusion Speaker Series

The UTHealth Houston Office of Diversity and Inclusion has released their lineup for the 2023 Diversity and Equity Speaker Series. The office invites the UTHealth Houston community to attend as many of these speaker sessions as they would like to enhance their own knowledge and understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Below is the schedule of speakers for the spring season.

February Speaker Session
“What is measured, is changed: Who are we considering in biomedical engineering?”

Speaker: Erika Moore, PhD, assistant professor and Rhines Rising Star Larry Hench Professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering at the University of Florida

Discussion highlights:

  • Describe our current understanding of reporting race or self-identified ancestry in biomedical engineering
  • Articulate the current limitations of our models
  • Provide steps for intervention in reporting and considering how we address diversity using in vitro models

March Speaker Session
“Parent-in-training: advocating for residents and fellows from pregnancy to parenthood”

Speaker: Eleanor Sharp, MD, MS, associate program director, Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh

Discussion highlights:

  • Describe how paternity leave, breastfeeding support, and child care policies support gender equity
  • Recognize the unique challenges facing pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding trainees in addition to those struggling with infertility and/or pregnancy loss
  • Consider how training programs, academic institutions, and national societies can promote trainee wellness, advance gender equity, and advocate for the physician workforce
