SUMMARY:Optimizing the Health of Cancer Patients and Survivors by Targeting the Biology and Heterogeneity of Aging
DESCRIPTION:Please join the McGovern Medical School Research Committee on Tuesday on April 14th in MSB 1.006 of McGovern Medical School at UTHealth for an important interdisciplinary discussion on Cancer and Aging Research. The workshop aims to explore the biological mechanisms underlying aging and cancer\, with a focus on identifying shared pathways and potential therapeutic targets. It will address the heterogeneity observed in both aging and cancer by examining the roles of genetic\, epigenetic\, and environmental factors in shaping patient outcomes. Additionally\, the workshop seeks to promote translational research by bridging the gap between basic scientific discoveries and clinical applications\, fostering the development of innovative treatments and interventions. Finally\, it will provide a platform to encourage collaboration and networking\namong researchers\, clinicians\, and other stakeholders engaged in aging and cancer research. \nSpeakers: Dr. Yi Ping Li: Professor in the Dept of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston\nDr. An Ngo-Huang :Associate Professor\, Department of Palliative\, Rehabilitation\, and Integrative Medicine\, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center\,\nDr. Rahul Shah: Oncology Fellow\, Department of Oncology\, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center\nChaired by Dr. Dana Giza\, Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine\, McGovern Medical School at UTHealth\nChair: Dana Giza\, Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Care\,\nUniversity of Texas Health Science Center at Houston

SUMMARY:Neurosurgery Research Seminar - protein engineering for immunomodulation
DESCRIPTION:“Protein engineering for immunomodulation” will be presented by Dr. Yubin Zhou on Thursday\, April 30\, 2026\, in MSB 2.135 at 3 pm. \nYubin Zhou\, MD\, PhD\, FAAAS\, FAIMBE\, FRSC\nPresidential Impact Fellow & Chancellor EDGES Fellow\nProfessor and Director\, Center for Translational Cancer Research\nInstitute of Biosciences and Technology &\nDepartment of Translational Medical Sciences\,\nCollege of Medicine\, Texas A&M University \nMicrobial opsin-based optogenetics has been nothing short of revolutionary for the neuroscience field. Owing to the radical difference in the localization and excitability between immune cells and neurons\, a parallel evolution of synthetic biology tools tailored for the immune system requires totally different design principles. In this talk\, I will explore how the convergence of optogenetics\, chemogenetics\, nanotechnology\, and immunoengineering can propel the burgeoning field of synthetic immunology. In parallel\, I will showcase engineering strategies for creating programmable cell-based therapies and biologics equipped with precision switches\, thereby allowing precise control over the dose\, location\, and timing of therapeutic effects. These approaches are anticipated to not only accelerate the mechanistic understanding of molecular and cellular physiology\, but also offer transformative solutions for treating immunoinflammatory disorders\, cancer\, and neurodegenerative diseases.
