SUMMARY:The Cost of Beauty: Infections Associated with Cosmetic Procedures
DESCRIPTION:In this upcoming TEPHI Grand Rounds webinar\, Stacey Rose\, MD\, will examine the infectious disease risks associated with cosmetic procedures\, an often overlooked source of bacterial infections\, non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections\, and even botulism. The session will explore infections linked to cosmetic procedures performed in both medical and non-medical settings\, whether in the United States or as part of medical tourism. Rose will also discuss strategies to reduce infection risk and highlight important considerations for individuals with compromised immune systems. \nRose is an associate professor of medicine\, infectious diseases\, and director of the Center for Professionalism at Baylor College of Medicine. She serves as vice chair of the Professional Development Committee for the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA)\, and as a member of the IDSA Pandemic Preparedness Task Force.

SUMMARY:50th Henry Strobel Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The Henry Strobel Retreat is a chance for first-year students to meet their future classmates in a stress-free\, laid-back environment.  Many current students\, faculty\, and alumni attend\, so they will have a chance to meet a lot of your McGovern family. \nThe 2026 retreat will be held at Camp Boxwoods\, a Camp Cho-Yeh camp\, just over an hour north of Houston\, and has a wide variety of recreation offerings\, including paintball\, axe throwing\, basketball\, rope swings\, archery\, and a variety of lawn games. The property also has a swimming hole where there will be opportunities to swim\, kayak\, play sand volleyball\, or just sit and enjoy the great outdoors. In between activities\, a variety of lunch options will be provided. Transportation from the UTHealth Recreation Center to Camp Cho-Yeh and back will be provided.

SUMMARY:16th Annual Yatsu Day Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The UTHealth Houston Institute for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease will host the 16th Annual Yatsu Day Symposium\, “The New Era of Stroke Care: Pharmaceutical Innovation and Therapeutics.” The half-day event aims to help increase physicians’ and trainees’ knowledge in stroke care and brain health. This year’s agenda will focus on new pharmaceuticals\, including GLP-1 receptor agonists\, and how they are changing stroke care. The program will also include discussion of new clinical trials and AI technologies testing emerging therapies in stroke. \nThe annual event is named in honor of Dr. Frank Yatsu\, professor emeritus of neurology\, who passed away in 2012. He was the second chair of the Department of Neurology and an internationally recognized leader in stroke.
