Biography

Dr. Kristofer Charlton-Ouw is an Associate Professor in the UT Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery. He serves as the program Director for the Vascular Surgery Residency Program at the McGovern Medical School, is the co-director of the department’s Clinical Science Program and Director of the Vascular Laboratory. He is interested in clinical trials to improve evidence-based practice and is the principle investigator of several sponsored- and investigator-initiated clinical trials. His clinical and research interests include aortic aneurysm and dissection, prosthetic graft infection, hemodialysis access, peripheral arterial disease, and postoperative pain control.

Dr. Charlton-Ouw has written book chapters and published articles on aortic diseases, carotid artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and hemodialysis access.  As the Director of the Clinical Science Program, Dr. Charlton-Ouw spearheads many investigator-initiated clinical trials in cardiovascular surgery research.  His current research involves new treatments in hemodialysis access and aortic diseases as well as surgical cost-benefit analyses.  He is also investigating the optimal and effective management strategies for postoperative pain among open cardiothoracic and vascular surgical patients.

His vested interest in management of graft infection resulted in innovations in the complex aortic graft infection management through antibiotic-beads, which are embedded with a novel combination of broad-spectrum antibiotics adopted from his laboratory based bench research.
