Dr. Kamal G. Khalil Addresses Commencement Speech Nearly 60 Years After Graduating

McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Adjunct Professor with the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Kamal G. Khalil, MD, returned to his home, Cairo, Egypt to provide the 2019 Commencement Speech at his Alma Mater, Cairo University. Dr. Khalil completed his medical degree from Cairo University 57 years ago in 1962 before advancing his medical training and education here in the United States. Dr. Khalil served as the chief of Division of General Thoracic Surgery with UTHealth’s Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery.

“Being a physician all those years, I never lost the sense of wonder at the immense resilience of the human body and how far we came in our ability to fight some very ancient scourges of mankind such as tuberculosis, syphilis, cancer, and trauma,” Khalil said.
Dr. Khalil authored numerous publications during his academic medical career, and is an active member in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and Arab American Medical Association, among others.
Khalil retired from McGovern Medical School in 2017. We are proud and honored to have Dr. Kahlil serve as such an integral part of our department, and look forward to his continued and shared legacy in Houston and around the world.
