UT Health, Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery participates and is recognized at this year’s Vascular Annual Meeting

The Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at the McGovern Medical School are in preparation for the 2018 Society of Vascular Surgery’s Vascular Annual Meeting on June 20-23. The meeting will be hosted in Boston, Massachusetts at the Hynes Convention Center.

The UT Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Team have been selected to attend and participate in various exhibits and sessions surrounding the annual meeting-

The Department’s chairman and leader, Dr. Hazim Safi has been selected to present the highly esteemed Holman’s Lecture, on the Morning of Saturday, June 23rd. Additionally, Dr. Safi will be presenting on:

  • Thoracoabdominal Aneurysm: Pearls for Successful Open Repair

Friday, June 22

Dr. Sheila Coogan is scheduled to present on the following;

  • When to Choose Systemic Thrombolysis?
  • W8: Mastering the Art of Crossing Tibial CTO

Lastly, the University of Texas, McGovern Medical School’s Department of Vascular Surgery faculty and research team have diligently been working on the following projects that were also selected to present at this year’s annual meeting.

  2. Predictors and Descriptors of Readmissions After Acute Aortic Dissection – presenter: Samuel Leake. Faculty Mentor: Rana O Afifi
  3. Predictive and Protective Factors Influencing Spinal Cord Ischemia Following TEVAR: presenter: Amberly Ray. Faculty Mentor: Harleen Sandhu
  4. Fewer Complications with Smaller Incisions in Anterolateral Spine Exposures – presenter: Sophia Khan. Faculty Mentor: Kristofer Charlon-Ouw
  5. Impact of Baseline Vascular Disease Burden on Outcomes of Thoracoabdominal Aortic Repair Involving Visceral Segment – presenter: Samuel Leonard. Faculty Mentor: Harleen Sandhu

Third year McGovern Medical School student, Samuel Leonard has been awarded the Medical Student/General Surgery Resident Travel Scholarship, sponsored by the Society for Vascular Surgery, in the amount of $450 which also includes complimentary registration to attend the 2018 Vascular Annual Meeting.

The Department is looking forward to participating in this year’s annual meeting in the historic city of Boston. The Society for Vascular Surgery mission is to “advance excellence and innovation in vascular health through education, advocacy, research, and public awareness”. The University of Texas, McGovern Medical School Vascular Surgery Program continues to be humbled and honored to participate in such a prestigious event such as VAM.
