UTHealth Houston EM Residents Take Center Stage at TCEP Research Forum

The Texas College of Emergency Physicians(TCEP) is an organization composed of over 2050 emergency physicians in Texas. Their annual meeting entitled “TCEP re-CONNECT 2022” was held on April 22-23, 2022. Representing multiple residencies across the state, the in-person forum was hosted in Ft. Worth, Texas.
Residents presented posters and competed in a simulation-based series of games called the “OlEMpics”. UTHealth Houston PGY – 1 Zack Timmons won the best research poster presentation entitled “The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Incidence and Outcomes from Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) in Texas”. The study illustrated state-wide evidence of increased OHCA incidence during COVID, along with worsening rates of Bystander CPR. This study’s significance lies in its novelty of geographic size, temporal scope, and comprehensive nature of EMS agencies being part of the CARES database. PGY-2 Victoria Morris and PGY-1 Samuel Beger also shared poster abstracts at the conference, both about better understanding social and ethnic disparities in cardiac arrest outcomes across the state.
Additionally, UTHealth Houston’s McGovern Medical School won the “OlEMpics” with Mary Spring, Sullivan Hanback, Phil Barker, Nicholas Heft, Michael Vu, Neha Gupta, Victoria Morris, and Samuel Beger. McGovern medical student and EM-bound Jonathon Bruhn assisted the team in various capacities and performed multiple procedures.
