Expertise in vascular surgery

At UTHealth Houston Heart & Vascular, our vascular and endovascular surgeons specialize in treating patients with circulatory disorders using a range of medical therapies, minimally invasive procedures, and reconstructive surgical techniques. Our vascular surgeons diagnose and treat vascular health conditions and develop long-term relationships with their patients focused on individualized care. When medication and noninvasive therapies are ineffective, our surgeons utilize modern vascular surgical procedures employing advanced technology and innovative approaches.

Patient-centered approach

We understand that vascular conditions can have a significant impact on your overall health and well-being. That’s why our vascular surgery program focuses on delivering personalized, patient-centered care. From your initial consultation to post-operative follow-up, our dedicated healthcare team will provide you with personalized attention, clear communication, and support throughout your treatment journey.

We believe in empowering our patients with knowledge and involving them in the decision-making process. Our team will take the time to explain your diagnosis, discuss treatment options, and address any questions or concerns you may have. We are committed to working collaboratively with you, and your healthcare team, to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals.

Comprehensive vascular services

We offer a comprehensive range of vascular services to address the diverse needs of our patients. Our services include:

  • Endovascular interventions: Our skilled vascular surgeons are experts in performing minimally invasive endovascular procedures to treat a variety of vascular conditions. These procedures involve using catheters and advanced imaging techniques to access and treat the affected blood vessels, reducing the need for open surgery and promoting faster recovery times. Interventions can include transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR), endovascular abdominal aneurysm repair (EVAR) and more.
  • Vascular reconstruction and bypass: In cases where more extensive treatment is necessary, our surgeons are experienced in performing vascular reconstruction and bypass surgeries. These procedures involve creating alternate pathways for blood flow to bypass blocked or damaged blood vessels, restoring proper blood circulation and improving overall vascular health.
  • Carotid artery surgery: Our team specializes in carotid artery surgery to treat carotid artery disease, which can cause strokes or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). We perform carotid endarterectomy, a procedure to remove plaque buildup in the carotid arteries, as well as carotid artery stenting, a minimally invasive procedure to open narrowed carotid arteries using stents.
  • Aortic aneurysm repair: Our surgeons have expertise in performing complex procedures to repair or replace weakened segments of the aorta, promoting optimal blood flow and preventing potentially life-threatening complications. Three main types of aortic aneurysms include abdominal aortic aneurysm, thoracic aortic aneurysm, and thorabdominal aortic aneurysm,
  • Venous disease treatment: Our vascular surgeons diagnose and treat a variety of venous diseases, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT), varicose veins, and chronic venous insufficiency. We offer minimally invasive procedures such as endovenous ablation and sclerotherapy to relieve symptoms, improve venous circulation, and enhance overall quality of life.
  • Vasculitis: Our specialized team offers comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for various forms of vasculitis, addressing inflammation in blood vessel walls. Through advanced diagnostic techniques and personalized treatment plans, we target the underlying causes and manage symptoms to improve patient outcomes. Treatment may include immunosuppressive medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, and other therapies tailored to individual needs.
  • Lymphedema management: Our dedicated lymphedema management program provides holistic care for individuals experiencing chronic swelling due to lymphatic fluid buildup. Our multidisciplinary approach includes manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, exercise programs, and skin care education. We aim to enhance mobility, reduce discomfort, and improve overall quality of life for patients dealing with this condition.

Advancing vascular medicine for the world

Through cutting-edge research and comprehensive clinical trials, we are committed to advancing vascular health to new heights. Our dedicated team tirelessly explores innovative treatments and therapies, paving the way for better outcomes and improved quality of life for patients worldwide. Some of our achievements include:

  • Establishment of the first Advanced Endovascular Aortic Research Program in Houston using investigational device exemption (IDE) disease-specific devices
  • In 2021, Dr. Gustavo Oderich performed the first three-vessel percutaneous endovascular aortic arch repair via groin with no incisions in the U.S.
