Dr. Scott received his MD degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN where he also completed a residency in internal medicine.  Following a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Iowa and service as a medical officer in the United States Army, he joined the faculty of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1976.  He has spent the majority of his career at this institution apart from 4 years at UTMB in Galveston, from 2005-2009.  He is board certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Gastroenterological Association. He has frequently been listed in Best Doctors in America.®
Dr. Scott has had an interest in gastrointestinal motility for most of his career, with a particular focus on swallowing disorders and esophageal disease.  He has also seen and cared for patients with generalized disorders of gastrointestinal motility , as sometimes occurs in scleroderma, as well as problems with defecation including incontinence.  He has served on the Medical Advisory Board for the Texas Bluebonnet Chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation.  He currently works as Medical Director for Gastroenterology at LBJ General Hospital in Houston, one of the major teaching institutions for the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.
Dr Scott’s other interest has been in biomedical ethics. During a one year sabbatical leave in 2000-2001, he obtained an MA degree in Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland OH.  Over the years since then he has written and lectured in this area, particularly as it affects gastroenterology.  He has been a member of the Institutional Ethics Committee at both Memorial Hermann Hospital TMC and UTMB and has also worked in the area of ethical issues in human subject research.
