The McGovern Center offers a variety of blue book, or extracurricular, electives for a number of years. Arguably one of the most popular electives is the Art of Observation, a three-session series that brings students together at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. During the series, which is held twice each academic year, students gain instruction and experience in observation, an essential skill in clinical diagnosis. Once only offered to students at McGovern Medical School, the elective was opened to include students from the UTHealth School of Dentistry several years ago. The Art of Observation has continued to be a successful and meaningful program to all students.
UTHealth’s Media Relations recently developed a short video about the Art of Observation, which is now featured on the university’s YouTube. Course director Rebecca Lunstroth, J.D., speaks about the course with students from both disciplines.
