Thomas Cole and Ben Saxton publish essay on challenges of the Fourth Age

Thomas Cole, PhD, and Ben Saxton, PhD, co-authored a paper on the challenges men face as they approach the Fourth Age—a reference to post-retirement age. In the essay, Cole and Saxton view Sheriff Ed Tom Bell, the protagonist of No Country for Old Men (Cormac McCarthy, 2005), as an exemplar of the Fourth Age. Bell struggles with relevance, masculinity, love, and meaning after his retirement from law enforcement, echoing challenges similarly faced by aging men. The essay appeared in the Autumn 2017 issue of Perspectives in Biology and Medicine, a special issue on the varieties of aging edited by Muriel Gillick, MD, and was made available recently on Project Muse.
