The Sacred Vocation Program appears in the May 2018 issue of Out in Front: Healthy Aging, a donor publication created by UTHealth. The program is a unique offering for medical residents of McGovern Medical School, spanning five sessions of reflection and discussion among participants with guidance from a trained facilitator. Program manager Sylvia Villarreal, M.Ed., M.P.H., describes the program as one that engages residents’ “whole humanity,” with Thomas Cole, Ph.D., noting, “If you want to nurture the spirit of the patient, you have to nurture the spirit of the caregiver. A resilient caregiver provides more humane and effective care.” A recent participant, Fisayomi Shobayo, M.D., shared that the program reminded her of the sacred trust given by patients that she feels must be treated with the highest respect.
