Rebecca Lunstroth comments on gene-editing technology

The McGovern Center’s associate director and assistant professor, Rebecca Lunstroth, JD, was quoted by local CBS affiliate, KHOU 11. Lunstroth’s comments explain the ethical and health issues relevant to gene-editing on the heels of a recent controversial report of a Rice University researcher and Chinese scientist who used gene-editing technology on human embryos. CRISPR, the gene-editing system in question, may have the potential to cure disease; however, Lunstroth cautions that, in the wrong hands, such technology can be misused for negative purposes like eugenics.
