The McGovern Center’s associate director and assistant professor, Rebecca Lunstroth, J.D., was quoted by local CBS affiliate, KHOU 11. Lunstroth’s comments explain the ethical and health issues relevant to gene-editing on the heels of a recent controversial report of a Rice University researcher and Chinese scientist who used gene-editing technology on human embryos. CRISPR, the gene-editing system in question, may have the potential to cure disease; however, Lunstroth cautions that, in the wrong hands, such technology can be misused for negative purposes like eugenics.
