Aki’s research team focuses on the elucidation of the leading mechanisms by which aging and stroke induce the vascular accumulation of amyloid-β. While vascular basement membrane (vBM) fibrosis occurs during CAA, and may expand to obliterate the perivascular space required for perivascular solute exchange, they have addressed the impact of vBM composition and structure on paravascular flux. This mechanistic study may provide novel therapeutic strategies for preventing and treating CAA in a variety of patients.
