Risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease and related brain disorders

Research Information

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease leading to dementia in the elderly, mostly affecting individuals over 65 years old. The deficient knowledge about Alzheimer’s etiology and the implication of risk factors in the onset and progression of the disease makes its prevention an arduous task. Our research is focused in the analysis of risk factors of Alzheimer’s disease, including smoking, consumption of meat, and comorbidity (type 2 diabetes, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy and stroke). Our work includes experimental approaches using both transgenic mouse models and hippocampal slice culture. The use of multidisciplinary techniques, including animal behavior, histology, western blot, and ex vivo culture, allow us to analyze in detail the underlying mechanisms involved in Alzheimer’s pathology and how different factors exacerbate this process.
