Dr. Eric Eichenwald, chair of the Department of Pediatrics, has announced the appointment of Dr. John Breinholt as the director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology, effective June 1, 2014. He also will be Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Breinholt graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine and completed his pediatric residency at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. He received his pediatric cardiology training at Texas Children’s Hospital, where he also received additional training in cardiomyopathy and cardiac transplant under the mentorship of Dr. Jeff Towbin. After completing an advanced fellowship in cardiac catheterization, also at TCH, he was recruited to Indiana University School of Medicine, where he was associate professor of pediatrics, director of the Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program, and director of education for the Division of Pediatric Cardiology.
“Dr. Breinholt will be a wonderful addition to the faculty, and a dynamic leader for the department,” Eichenwald said. “I am looking forward to working with him to grow the cardiology and cardiac surgery programs.”
Eichenwald said he was grateful to Dr. Syam Rao for his leadership of the division during the search process. “Dr. Rao has done a wonderful job for the department and the medical school, and I deeply appreciate him stepping in as interim division chief during a difficult time for the cardiology division,” he added.
