Dr. Duke shows off his Order of Saint George cake.

Renowned surgeon Dr. James H. “Red” Duke, Jr., the John B. Holmes Professor of Clinical Sciences and professor of surgery, was knighted into the Order of Saint George during a special ceremony on Friday, Feb. 13 at Texas A&M University’s Sanders Corps of Cadets Center.

The saint symbolizes bravery and dedication to faith and decency, and the Honorable Order of Saint George recognizes the very best tankers and cavalrymen among members of the U.S. Cavalry and Armor Association.

Duke, a former Aggie yell leader and 1950 graduate of Texas A&M, was in the Texas National Guard from 1948-1950 and also served two years as an Army tank commander during the Korean War.

Upon being knighted by Brig. Gen. Patrick M. Hamilton, the senior Aggie armor officer in the Texas National Guard, Duke told family and friends he was humbled.

“It means so much to me,” said Duke, the founder and medical director of Memorial Hermann Life Flight. “To me every day is an opportunity to try and be of some kind of service to somebody. And serving our country is a great honor and privilege.”
