UT Physicians, the medical practice of McGovern Medical School is expanding its pediatric teen clinic in order to accommodate the growing number of teen patients seeking care.

The unique facility opened nearly two years ago with a mission to cater specifically to the needs of teens in Southwest Houston. After conducting a needs assessment and with the help of geo-mapping, a team of physicians and data analysts looked at different locations with high teen populations and determined Southwest Houston was an area that could benefit from the many resources available at the clinic. Not only is the area home to many youth, it is also easily accessible by public transportation.

“The goal of our teen clinic is to provide a medical home to teens to improve access to care, effectively coordinate care and proactively provide preventive, primary, routine and chronic care where needed,” said Muttaya Bollich, project manager for the clinic.

The UT Physicians Pediatric Teen Clinic’s main campus, located at 5420 Dashwood, provides a variety of services, such as healthy lifestyle counseling, HIV counseling and testing, sexually transmitted disease evaluation and treatment and healthy lifestyle counseling. The clinic also operates at The University of Texas Professional Building at 6410 Fannin St. The health care team includes physicians, nurses, social workers, behavioral counselors, a nutritionist, and psychiatrist.

“They’re really good with kids and they take their time,” Bollich said. “They really explore teen issues.”

Although both facilities are open to all teens, the resources are geared more toward teens with specific health needs such as weight management and behavioral issues.

“This time of life is exciting, but it can also be very challenging,” said Rebecca M. Beyda, M.D., M.S., assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics. “I hope we continue to grow and can provide more services to the teens.”

The clinic is connected with the UT Physicians practice to offer patients a quick turnaround when referred by their primary care doctor to a specialist.
