Get ready to lace up your walking shoes and join the Office of Graduate Medical Education at McGovern Medical School and Samuel D. Luber, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor and vice-chair of education and academic affairs in the Department of Emergency Medicine, for Houston’s first Walk with a Doc Texas event Sept. 15 in Hermann Park.
Luber will lead the walk, which will be held 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., and members of the community are invited to join him and other health care professionals from UTHealth. Luber will give a brief health information talk before the walk begins and participants will be able to ask questions related to health during the walk. The event is hosted by McGovern Medical School and Hermann Park Conservancy.
“We are excited to offer this healthy activity to our patients and to the Houston community at large,” Luber said. “Walking is a great way to reverse the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle and improve health and well-being. We encourage everyone to join us for this free fitness activity and fun conversation.”
Those interested in participating should meet at the southeast corner of Miller Outdoor Theater (6000 Hermann Park Dr.) in the park. The family-friendly event is part of a grassroots effort started by an Ohio cardiologist in 2005 as a way to motivate his patients to be active. Walk with a Doc now has more than 400 chapters worldwide. Locally, the program is backed by the Texas Medical Association. The event will take place every third Saturday of the month.
For those parking at Hermann Park, Lot C at 1500 Hermann Drive is recommended. For more information, visit the Houston Walk with a Doc website.
