Hello,
I was so delighted to receive this note from Dr. Richard Gorlick, new Division Head and Department Chair of Pediatric Oncology at MD Anderson. A physician-scientist with special interest and expertise in osteosarcoma, Dr. Gorlick was recently recruited to Houston from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/ The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. His very kind note made my day. I am so proud of our students and a culture that mixes learning and service and caring for others.
Dear Dr. Stoll,
At MD Anderson this past Saturday, we had a prom for our patients. While waiting for an elevator to get to the observation deck where some of the events were being held, I spoke to one of the volunteer individuals who was transporting a patient in a wheelchair. Quickly I discovered that he was a first-year medical student from the McGovern Medical School. In fact, he was part of a group of over 20 students who had volunteered to help out at the event. They were wonderful, interacting with the kids, being helpful and a huge part of making the event very successful.
I am immensely impressed that a group of students in the midst of their demanding first year, opted to spend their Saturday evening helping in this way. I do believe this reflects in an immensely positive way on the culture that is being engendered by your school.
I thought you should know about their altruism. They clearly were not seeking any recognition for what they were doing but thought it needed to be acknowledged nevertheless.
I did not get the names of the students that were helping but indeed if any way existed for my thanks being extended to them, it would sincerely be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Richard
