This past week has shaken us to the core. We’ve witnessed the tragic deaths of innocent people at a synagogue in Pittsburgh; threats against two former Presidents, their families, and other public figures; as well as other episodes of violence. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims. There is no place for hatred and violence in civil society—violence based on religion or race or where we were born or who we love or our political beliefs. Please reach out to each other to comfort and reaffirm our values and consider how we might prevent violence. Let’s embrace our families, neighbors, friends, colleagues—and pay special attention to our children and our patients—the people under our watch. This is a time to reflect on who we are, the vision we have for our community, and what we want this country to represent to other nations of the world.
