May 19, 2017
Hello,
I love graduations—joyous celebrations of important milestones. We had a wonderful day yesterday at our medical school’s 44th commencement. The Class of 2017 commanded the stage at the George R. Brown Convention Center, surrounded by their families and loved ones. I was proud and honored to celebrate with our students and to hand out diplomas and shake the hand of each of our graduates as they made the transition to being a doctor.
Dr. Jennifer Swails, assistant professor of internal medicine, was our featured speaker and honored guest. She delivered a very moving address, telling students what is special about the profession of medicine to her and reminding them to always be grateful for the privilege of being a doctor. UTHealth President Giuseppe Colasurdo asked our students to follow the advice of beloved trauma surgeon Dr. James “Red” Duke, Jr. who said that the patient was always the most important person in the room.
Here is a video highlighting the ceremony and a link to some photos from the special day. Thanks to each of you who made the day a memorable one for our graduates.
Warm regards,
Barbara
