Hello,
As the country continues to grapple with and speak out against injustice and social inequality, most specifically related to racism, here are three upcoming events happening in our medical school community this week:
Please consider attending the virtual vigil on Monday, June 8 from noon to 12:30 to honor the life and memory of George Floyd.
Our student community, together with other students, health care providers, and researchers in the Texas Medical Center, plans to gather on Tuesday June 9 for a “walking vigil in solidarity with the Black community to raise awareness and advocate for change.” Information about the event can be found here.
On Wednesday, June 10 from 3-4 p.m., UTHealth leadership is sponsoring a town hall meeting to discuss the university’s continued commitment to delivering quality health care to all people; to diversifying the physician workforce; and to tackling health disparities head-on.
McGovern Medical School supports students’ involvement in these meetings and has given full approval for you to don your white coats as well as to be excused from clinical duties for the duration of the walk on Tuesday. The clerkship directors have been notified of this approval, but please speak with your attending to determine whether you are expected to return to clinical service once the event has concluded. You do not need to submit an excused absence request in the portal.
ALSO—please remember the importance of practicing safe, social distancing to minimize risk while participating in demonstrations: wear a mask and leave a minimum of 6 feet of space between you and others. STAY SAFE
