December 17, 2015
Hello,
As I look back on my first couple of months as dean, I continue to be amazed by the people and work being accomplished here. I have had the opportunity to meet so many of you – our own faculty, staff, and students, our friends and donors, and our colleagues throughout UTHealth and the Texas Medical Center. I have been listening at routine meetings and giving presentations to various groups as I do my best to attend as many meetings and events that I can.
As we look to a new year ahead, I am mindful of the opportunities that await us. When I started, on Oct. 1, this was McGovern Medical School. Now, we have been gifted with a new name and an endowment that will make a tangible difference to the work we do and the people we serve. The McGovern Medical School is not even a month old, yet there is a palpable feeling of energy and excitement about what our future holds, thanks to this most generous gift from Mrs. Kathrine McGovern and the John P. McGovern Foundation.
The holidays are a time to be surrounded by family and friends. I will be traveling to see my family for the holidays. Thanks to the McGovern Medical School and broader Houston community, I have felt so welcomed by you and am grateful to have so many new friends. I have enjoyed my first season of UTHealth and Memorial Hermann holiday parties. I understand that the dean has hosted a cookie reception in the past. I am looking forward to welcoming the New Year with a 2016 cookie reception, and I hope to see you all there.
Please be safe during this holiday time. UT Police Department is always available to escort students and employees to their vehicles (call 713-792-2890).
Thank you for all of your support and contributions during 2015. I look forward to a fantastic 2016 for the McGovern Medical School. This is a historic time for our medical school, and I am thrilled by the opportunities the future holds.
Warm regards,
Barbara
