April 25, 2019
Hello,
I am delighted to share with you the annual report from our Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases (IMM). We are fortunate that this research institute, focused on better understanding of diseases at the genetic, cellular, and molecular levels, is housed within the medical school. Scientists at IMM collaborate broadly across our 23 medical school departments.
Dr. John Hancock, executive director of the IMM and McGovern Medical School vice dean of research, is also chair of the Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology. For the past eight years, he has spearheaded the IMMpact Report to showcase the important work of the IMM, including profiles of each faculty member.
Dr. Hancock hosts the annual IMMpact Symposium each spring. The symposium features faculty presenting important research in a public seminar. This year’s event, “Weighing in on the Science of Staying Slim” will be held May 1, 4- 6:30 p.m. at the Fayez S. Sarofim Research Building. Featured speakers are Dr. Qingchun Tong, associate professor and Cullen Chair in Molecular Medicine, Center for Metabolic and Degenerative Disease, and Dr. Rebecca Berdeaux, associate professor in the Center for Metabolic and Degenerative Disease. Clinical colleagues Drs. Deborah Horn and Kelly Wirfel will be part of a panel to address clinical questions that may arise. Given the broad public health importance of the topic, we are hoping for a great turnout.
Please join me in thanking Dr. Hancock and our IMM faculty and staff for their hard work, innovations, and accomplishments—and hope to see you at the IMMpact Symposium.
Warm regards,
Barbara
