Hello,
Our medical school’s strategic plan is a road map that helps guide the future in our primary mission areas of education, research, and patient care. Over the past two years, faculty have been engaged in strategic planning for McGovern Medical School 2018-2022. Each mission area will address specific goals, objectives, and measurable outcomes. New this year is a separate strategic plan for Diversity and Inclusion. Monitoring of the plan, goals, and outcomes will be an ongoing quality review process. Benchmarks have been established to monitor progress in the next two years. Below is a brief summary of the plan.
Education Strategic Plan
Chairs: Patricia Butler, MD, vice dean for educational programs, and Philip Orlander, MD, associate dean for educational programs. Committee members: Len Cleary, Gary Rosenfeld, Margaret Uthman, Peggy Hsieh, Allison Ownby, Kimberly Pilkinton, Hilary Fairbrother, Sheela Lahoti, Christine Ford, and Samuel Neher.
The education strategic plan focuses on our continued development of a robust integrated curriculum, including interactive teaching strategies; multiple types of student assessment, including simulation and mentorship; and career development. It also includes resident and faculty development and fostering a positive learning environment to support student learning. With the development and implementation of the new curriculum, student performance and satisfaction has increased along with national test scores that are currently above the national average.
Research Strategic Plan
Chair: Trey Miller, PhD, associate dean for hospital quality initiatives, associate vice president, clinical research and health care quality. Committee members: Jack Byrne, John Hancock, Lillian Kao, Scott Lane, Gary Rosenfeld, Eric Thomas, and Jon Tyson.
The research strategic plan focuses on creating a true learning health care system—building a collaborative and productive research environment that helps inform clinical practice. The plan supports expanding clinical and translational research, as well as providing ongoing support for fundamental science. Objectives include recruiting and supporting research faculty, developing strong research mentoring programs, expanding our clinical and translational research programs, and increasing extramural research awards.
Clinical Strategic Plan
Chair: Tom Murphy, MD, assistant dean for community affairs and health policy. Committee members: Melissa Allen, Pamela Berens, Patricia Butler, Andrew Casas, Kevin Hwang, Phil Orlander, Allison Ownby, Julie Page, Bela Patel, Emily Robinson, Eric Thomas, and Mohammad Zare.
The clinical strategic plan includes working with the community and our patient base to improve health and patient safety, both inpatient and outpatient, building more integrated affiliations with our major academic and clinical partners. It aims to address the traditional issues of patient care as well as to develop new and innovative collaborative delivery models focused on improving health care quality through measurable outcomes with particular attention to population health. An emphasis will be to grow and expand McGovern Medical School’s clinical presence and to integrate behavioral and mental health services with primary care. Inter-professional education programs focused on a team-based approach to patient care and disease prevention remain a strategic goal. The expansion and addition of programs promoting faculty, staff, and student well-being will be an ongoing focus.
Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan
Chair: LaTanya Love, MD, associate dean for diversity and inclusion, associate dean for admissions and student affairs, vice president of diversity and leadership development. Committee members: Dana McDowelle, Pedro Mancias, and Wade McAlister.
The diversity and inclusion strategic plan focuses on fostering an environment that is welcoming and inclusive of all people, regardless of their background or identity. The plan encourages practices that ensure accountability and that demonstrate intention in recruitment of top talent from diverse backgrounds for our student, resident, faculty, and staff communities. The plan also focuses on sustainable support initiatives for faculty members and trainees that foster success. One of the outcomes of this plan is the proposed expansion of departmental vice-chairs for diversity and inclusion in some of our larger departments, including all departments with required medical student clerkships.
Thank you to the many faculty and staff involved in this strategic planning effort, especially Karen Spillar, associate vice president of planning, and Dr. Patricia Butler, vice dean for educational programs. The plan has been reviewed by various constituents. Feedback from our faculty, residents, students, and staff is vital to creating a meaningful and important document, which will guide our missions and help shape our future.
Warm regards,
Barbara
