Family Medicine Obstetrics Fellowship Training Program

The McGovern Medical School (UTHealth) Family Medicine Surgical Obstetrics Fellowship in Houston, Texas, is an evolving training program for Family Medicine Physicians within the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences that began in July of 2021.  Lead by a Family Medicine physician with Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) credentialing in Obstetrics and Gynecology and dual fellowship training in Obstetrics and Global Health, the diversified core faculty includes Family Medicine, OB, and MFM physicians.  This fellowship is transitioning to a twenty-four month educational experience that provides trainees with robust surgical obstetric training at an urban hospital that primarily serves a low socioeconomic demographic. On the backbone of an intentionally rigorous didactic curriculum focused on developing and solidifying an evidence-based cognitive approach to the care of pregnant and postpartum women, procedural training is centered on cesarean delivery, tubal ligation, operative vaginal delivery, and the performance and interpretation of obstetric ultrasound.

With the capacity to recruit and train 2 fellows per year, matriculants will be exposed to a high volume and a large variety of OB-GYN care encounters among a diverse patient population at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital.  Additional ultrasound training as well as inpatient medicine coverage takes place at the Texas Medical Center, which is the largest medical complex in the world.  Fellows will also see ambulatory patients in the University of Texas Physicians outpatient clinics in order to ensure mastery of a wide array of normal and problem pregnancies and obstetrical emergencies.

At the completion of their training, the fellows will be recognized regionally and nationally as potential leaders within the field of Family Medicine Obstetrics with the ability to acquire jobs at sites across the country. Fellows will also develop administrative skills to assist in assuming leadership roles after completion of their training.
