Beginning in the 2019-2020 academic year, ten third year students will have the opportunity to participate in a new clerkship model that McGovern Medical School will be piloting. This model is called a longitudinal integrated clerkship (LIC) and is becoming a common alternative clerkship structure at many medical schools. The LIC is not meant to replace our existing clerkships but to provide another type of learning experience for students who are interested.
LICs differ significantly from traditional clerkships. Clerkships usually are done in discrete blocks, where students spend several weeks focusing on a single specialty area, working with multiple preceptors and in a variety of locations before moving onto the next specialty. LICs are the opposite—they take place over a long period of time, often a whole year, and mix all of the specialties together during this time. Students are typically at a single location and have a dedicated preceptor or group of preceptors who work with them over the entire clerkship. They also have a panel of continuity patients they take responsibility for, learning how to function as a primary care physician.
Our LIC will take place at LBJ in a primarily outpatient setting and includes Internal Medicine, OB-Gyn, and Pediatrics. It is a 24 week rotation; the first four weeks will be inpatient, while the remaining 20 weeks will be spent rotating between the three specialty areas in outpatient settings. Students will still take shelf exams during the LIC and complete the same case logging requirements as regular clerkship students. After completing the LIC, students will take their remaining clerkships in the traditional model.
