Summer Ott, Psy.D.

Dr. Summer Ott is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). She also serves as the Director of the Concussion Program at Memorial Hermann Ironman Sports Medicine Institute.
Dr. Ott is a Neuropsychologist specializing in sports related concussions. She has extensive clinical and research experience with sports related concussions. She currently serves as the team neuropsychological consultant for the Houston Texans and Houston Rockets, as well as many universities and school districts in Texas. Previously, Dr. Ott served as a neuropsychology consultant for the Houston Dynamo and the Houston Aeros.
Dr. Ott received her undergraduate degree from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Missouri, where she also completed her Masters of Science. She went on to complete her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in neuropsychology from The School of Professional Psychology at Forest Institute in Springfield, Missouri. She completed her internship at the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, prior to accepting a neuropsychology fellowship position with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in the Sports Concussion Program.
Her research efforts focus on proper baseline testing, concussion in female athletes, effects of physical exertion on cognition, and long-term consequences of repeated head injury in athletes. Dr. Ott has co‐authored publications on neuropsychological assessment in scholarly journals and frequently conducts presentations regarding proper management of concussion.
Dr. Ott is a founding and executive board member of the Sports Neuropsychological Society. She served as Co-Chair for the 2nd Annual Sports Neuropsychology Society Concussion Symposium held in Dallas Texas. She was a key member of the task force that developed verbiage for a sports concussion bill in Texas known as Natasha’s Bill. This bill, signed into law in June 2012, establishes return-to-play guidelines for school-aged athletes with concussions.

“Vestibular Sensory Deficits and Cognitive Adaptation in Sports Concussions”
The goal of this project is to develop a multi-sensory rehabilitation program for sports concussed athletes and mTBI patients who suffer from vestibular related symptoms.

“Imaging and Biomarkers in Adolescents Cleared to Return to Play After Concussion”
The goal of this project is to investigate the effects of sports concussion on brain function and structure in adolescent athletes who meet guidelines for return to play one month post injury. Additionally, the project explores the usefulness of biomarkers from recovery from concussion.
