Kidney Oncology

Kidney-Oncology is quickly becoming a specialized aspect of pediatric nephrology. Children with cancer are a group at risk for kidney injury due to exposure to chemotherapeutic drugs and the potential risks associated with bone marrow transplantation.

The pediatric nephrologists at McGovern Medical School along with oncologists and intensive care doctors at The Children’s Cancer Hospital at MD Anderson Cancer Center are knowledgeable in the nephrotoxic effects of commonly used chemotherapeutic agents, acute kidney injury syndromes in cancer patients and kidney-related issues in recipients of bone marrow transplantation.

The field of oncology is rapidly changing as new therapies emerge and improve the outcomes for many types of cancer. Children with cancer are receiving diagnoses and treatment in the setting of more complicated conditions including chronic kidney disease. Cancer patients with kidney disease can require specific monitoring, treatments and modifications to their cancer treatment. In addition, with improved survival, children with cancer are living longer and may develop chronic kidney problems requiring long term care by a pediatric nephrologist.

In conjunction with the MD Anderson Cancer Center we offer a Pediatric Kidney-Oncology Clinic for children requiring follow-up for kidney-related issues both short and long-term, along with inpatient consultation and renal replacement services for those children requiring the highest level of kidney therapy.
