Under the direction of Madhavi K. Reddy, Ph.D., the Clinical and Translational Research Program on Traumatic Stress provides evidence-based treatment through the Stress, Trauma and Recovery Services (STARS) Clinic and conducts cutting-edge research in STARS Lab.
Our program focuses on the consequences of trauma exposure throughout the lifespan and the phenomenology of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), including the use of novel assessment of malleable cognitive and affective risk factors that develop and maintain symptoms of PTSD as well as the development of adjunctive treatments targeting these mechanisms. We take a translational approach to our research, rooted in the biopsychosocial model. Our work investigates multiple units of analysis with the ultimate goal of developing, implementing and disseminating effective treatments for trauma survivors.
Populations of interest include, but are not limited to, combat veterans and survivors of interpersonal violence.
Stress, Trauma and Recovery Services (STARS) Lab
The Stress, Trauma and Recovery Services (STARS) Lab conducts research on the underlying cognitive and affective mechanisms that contribute to the development and maintenance of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Our research methodology includes clinical interviews, experimental/cognitive tasks and the combined use of psychophysiological and behavioral indices of emotion and cognitive control. The lab currently has several studies underway including:
- An examination of attentional bias and attentional control using eye-gaze tracking technology in order to better understand how people process information biases that are involved in PTSD symptoms.
- An examination of the genetic and molecular pathways that influence the development and maintenance of PTSD.
- Program evaluation of our STARS Clinic protocol.
- A study examining the efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in remediating posttraumatic stress symptoms as a novel intervention and/or precursor to psychotherapeutic treatment.
