When did you join UTHealth?
My first day at work with UTHSCH was in April 2002.
What brought you here?
I have always been fascinated with science and animals. I was able to combine both of my favorite things. I have always wanted to work with animals. I moved to Texas from Mexico 28 years ago. Growing up in Mexico, I lived on a farm and have been around animals since I was a child. On the farm, I took care of the animals. My dream was to continue to work with animals as a career. I am able to treat the animals with dignity and respect.
Tell me about your work history here.
I have been working since 2002 at the UTHealth Center for Laboratory Animal Medicine and Care, acquiring knowledge and expertise in the animal care field for around 20 years. I was an animal attendant for 17 years, and then I was promoted to a team leader three years ago. During this time, I have obtained two professional certifications through the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS): Registered Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (RALAT) and Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT).
What are you most proud of accomplishing?
My most prized accomplishment on the job is being promoted to team leader. I have always wanted to be in a leadership position.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
What I enjoy most about my job is working with animals. I am able to deliver compassion and care through my daily duties.
Why have you stayed?
I have stayed employed at UTHealth because of the opportunity to grow in my career and share my knowledge with others.
When you are not at work, how do you spend your time?
I love spending time with my family when I’m not at work. We enjoy watching movies and baseball games since we are limited due to COVID.
