Dr. David Thompson earned his medical degree at Dalhousie University Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada. He completed his residency in general surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He subsequently completed his Fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
Dr. Thompson is Board-certified in both Colon and Rectal Surgery and General Surgery and has had a practice specializing in colon and rectal surgery since 1991. He currently offices in Texas Medical Center office of the UT Physicians Colon and Rectal Clinic. His practice includes the spectrum of colon and rectal surgical problems including colonoscopy. He has a special interest in inflammatory bowel disease and rectal cancer.
Dr. Thompson holds an appointment as an Associate Professor of Surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston McGovern Medical School.
Dr. Thompson has been a member of the Colon & Rectal Clinic of Houston since 1991, (now UT Physicians Colon and Rectal Clinic since 2015). He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, as well as a member of the Texas Medical Association, the Texas Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the Harris County Medical Society.
He is married to Dr. Gretchen Zimmerman, a general surgeon in Houston and has twin boy and girl children, one of whom is a general surgery resident, and the other is a medical student.
