Born in Zambia and raised in the United Kingdom and West Texas, Sheilendra Mehta is a surgeon who enjoys robotics and laparoscopic procedures. “It’s fun to do, like playing a video game, with exciting patient outcomes,” he says.

Growing up in the UK, this son of a pediatrician never played video games. He was a soccer player, and still plays today. His family later moved to Texas and he went to college at the University of Texas and Texas Tech University. “When we moved to Texas, that’s when I got focused on education, and figured out I wanted to be a doctor.”

He later pursued a laparoscopic fellowship at Methodist Hospital, and today that is his specialty. “It’s fun to come to work and it’s satisfying, too. Surgery is a great profession; there’s always a new procedure being developed or technique to learn. Your education never stops.”

In addition to soccer, Sheilendra also enjoys running. He recently ran the Houston Half-Marathon and plans to do more.
