Attendees of the 2024 Houston Area Pediatric Scoliosis and Spine Symposium at Memorial Hermann Hospital, Texas Medical Center (conference room), will gain valuable knowledge in the comprehensive evaluation and management of scoliosis. Key topics include the application of standardized screening tools, such as the Adam’s forward bend test, in both school and primary care settings. Participants will also learn when and how to utilize imaging techniques like X-rays and how to identify the right time to refer a patient to a specialist for further evaluation.
The symposium will cover decision-making criteria for observation, bracing, and surgical intervention, taking into account curve severity, progression, and patient-specific factors. A multidisciplinary approach involving collaboration with orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and psychologists will be emphasized to address the full spectrum of patient needs. Additionally, participants will be trained in conducting comprehensive evaluations, which include detailed patient history, neurological assessments, and physical exams, as well as strategies for working closely with neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, and physical therapists to ensure accurate diagnosis. Case studies will provide hands-on learning for identifying diagnostic challenges and developing strategies for differential diagnosis.
