COVID-19 survivor who tested positive for 30 days, thanks doctors and nurses who saved his life.
Dr. Jacob Birnbaum was experiencing common symptoms of COVID-19. Worried, he and his family were tested for COVID-19. The results were all positive. “How could this happen?” recalls Birnbaum, “I was so careful. Then I just got worse and worse.”
Dr. Birmbaum was then taken in an ambulance to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center where Dr. Bindu Akkanti, a pulmonologist at UTHealth Houston Heart & Vascular and Memorial Hermann, treated him.
He was placed on ECMO, an artificial lung machine, where doctors continued to monitor and test Dr. Birnbaum.
