Last month, researchers at UTHealth Houston received the Reviewer’s Choice Award from the American Society of Human Genetics for leading a comprehensive genetic study on the Mexican American community, a historically understudied population in genetic research.
The Cameron County Hispanic Cohort (CCHC) research program at UTHealth Houston School of Public Health Brownsville Campus collected and analyzed sociodemographic, clinical, and biological data from randomly selected participants in the Brownsville area, a predominantly Hispanic community. The study offered new insights on the genetic components of Mexican Americans and their susceptibilities to chronic disease.
David McPherson, MD, FACP, FACC, FAHA, professor and chair, Internal Medicine, served as the principal investigator in the study. Other UTHealth Houston recipients included Joseph McCormick, MD, professor of epidemiology, and Susan Fisher-Hoch, MD, professor of epidemiology, who co-directed the CCHC and the Clinical Research Unit.
