For a Humble man, gallstones led to heart failure diagnosis.

Pablo Amador assumed a stomach virus was the cause of his sudden pain and nausea.

“I wasn’t able to keep food down,” he said. “Then, I started having chest pains and wasn’t able to sleep. My energy level was low.”

After two weeks of symptoms, however, the 23-year-old Humble resident thought something more serious could be to blame.

His mother, Veronica Cantu, wondered if his gallbladder could be at the root of the problem. After all, issues ran in the family; she had her gallbladder removed at age 14.

After the end of his shift as manager at a restaurant at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, he headed to the emergency room at Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital in Kingwood. There, nurses hooked him up to an IV and began standard diagnostics. And he told them about his heart condition.

UTHealth Houston Heart & Vascular’s Dr. Anthony Estrera, professor and cardiothoracic surgeon, replaced the patient’s aorta and assistant professor and interventional cardiologist, Dr. Sukhdeep Basra, treated the patient for heart failure.
