
The UTHealth Houston Master of Science in Anesthesiology (MSA) Program is excited to announce Nina Wen, MSA, CAA, as Assistant Program Director!
Nina Wen received her Master of Science in Anesthesia from the Case Western Reserve University Houston Program in 2018 and has been with UTHealth Houston since 2019. She currently serves as Chief CAA for the department and Clinical Coordinator for the UTHealth MSA Program, where she oversees student clinical assignments and onboarding at Memorial Hermann – Texas Medical Center.
In her role as Assistant Program Director, she will work closely with the Program Director and fellow Assistant Program Director to support the program’s academic and clinical mission. She will play a key role in refining the clinical training experience for students, with a focus on preceptorship, clinical education, and specialty rotations within Memorial Hermann – Texas Medical Center. Her responsibilities will also include supporting the didactic curriculum through lecture development and delivery.
Nina remains deeply engaged in both clinical practice and student mentorship, and she looks forward to contributing to the continued growth, excellence, and visibility of the UTHealth Houston MSA Program.

Joan (pronounced “Jo-Ann”) serves as the Educational Programs Coordinator II. She brings over 15 years of administrative and operational experience across corporate and academic environments, including the housing development and healthcare industries. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Planning and has developed strong expertise in administrative operations, financial and program coordination, process improvement, and organizational support. Joan is committed to service excellence and supports students and faculty in advancing the MSA Program’s success.
Outside of work, she enjoys exploring new foods, spending time in local parks walking or biking, discovering new music, including K-pop, and binge-watching Netflix shows. She enjoys organizing things at home, often by color.

Salma Chavira has been promoted to Educational Coordinator for the Master of Science in Anesthesia Program. She previously served as an Administrative Assistant within MSA. Her strong organizational skills, reliability, and commitment to excellence have made her an invaluable member of the team, and we are excited to see her continue to grow in this new role.
In her free time, Salma enjoys playing soccer, weightlifting, and spending time with her corgi — hobbies that reflect her energy, discipline, and enthusiasm both inside and outside of work.
