About Us

Welcome to the UTHealth Houston Master of Science in Anesthesia Program, the twenty-first program established in the country, housed under the McGovern Medical School, and the first program from a Texas state institution. This rigorous 28-month program will feature a curriculum encompassing 100 credit hours, 900 hours of didactic and simulation-based learning, a minimum of 600 anesthesia cases, and clinical training with over 2,000 patient-contact hours.  The inaugural cohort of students will begin their studies in Fall 2024. The program’s physical site will be in the UTHealth Houston Professional Building, with development set to start soon.

The UTHealth Houston MSA Program is supported by the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine, which is situated in the 4th largest city in the country. Our goal is to develop exceptional and compassionate Anesthesiologist Assistants through an innovative approach to education and a strong clinical foundation.

Our Program introduces students to the practice of anesthesia and the operating room early on in their training, which is facilitated by the guidance and support of more than 35 CAAs and 100 Attending Anesthesiologists on staff. Students will learn how to manage anesthetics for subspecialties including trauma, cardiovascular, neurology, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, urology, ENT, OMFS, ophthalmology, orthopedics, advanced endoscopy, and interventional radiology.

Additionally, our students will train in the nation’s busiest trauma center and one of only two Level 1 trauma centers in Houston. Memorial Hermann Hospital – TMC includes 48 adult and pediatric operating rooms and the only comprehensive burn center in the city. The varied experiences, coupled with high acuity cases, a rigorous curriculum, and an innovative simulation lab, produces capable, certified, and well-rounded Anesthesiologist Assistants who are ready to become future leaders in anesthesia and patient safety.
