Biography

Alex Wetzig, MD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, where he provides expert care in orthopedic foot and ankle surgery. He offers both operative and nonoperative treatments with a focus on innovative, patient-centered solutions. His expertise includes orthopedic trauma, fractured extremities, sports injuries, joint replacement, and advanced foot and ankle procedures such as total ankle replacement, arthroscopy, revision surgery, and minimally invasive techniques. He also treats deformities, bunions, hammertoes, arthritis, diabetic foot conditions, and performs reconstructive and limb salvage surgery. 

A native of West Texas, Dr. Wetzig graduated summa cum laude from the University of Texas Permian Basin and was recognized as the top student in the College of Arts and Sciences. He earned his medical degree at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, where he was elected president of his graduating class and the student senate. He was also inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Societies. 

Dr. Wetzig completed his orthopedic surgery residency at UTHealth Houston, followed by fellowship training in orthopedic foot and ankle surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas under Dr. James Brodsky. He has authored several peer-reviewed studies and textbook chapters, serves as an editor for multiple orthopedic journals, and is active in the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He also mentors students of the Joint Admission Medical Program of Texas. 

Committed to serving the Houston community, Dr. Wetzig takes an individualized, goal-oriented, listen-first approach to care. His research focuses on lower extremity trauma outcomes, biologic enhancement of foot and ankle arthrodesis, deformity correction, and medical education. 

He is currently seeing patients at Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital.
