Biography

Alex Wetzig, MD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. He specializes in foot and ankle surgery, treating a wide range of orthopedic conditions, while offering both operative and nonoperative care.

Dr. Wetzig treats foot and ankle orthopedic trauma, sports-related injuries, and also manages complex foot and ankle conditions. These include joint replacement, total ankle replacement, arthroscopy, and revision surgery. Moreover, he performs minimally invasive foot and ankle procedures. He treats deformities, bunions, hammertoes, arthritis, and diabetic foot conditions. When necessary, he performs reconstructive and limb salvage surgery.

Originally from West Texas, Dr. Wetzig graduated summa cum laude from the University of Texas Permian Basin. He was named the top student in the College of Arts and Sciences. He later earned his medical degree from McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. During medical school, he served as president of his graduating class and the student senate. He was also inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Societies.

After completing medical school, Dr. Wetzig went on to complete his orthopedic surgery residency at UTHealth Houston. He then pursued fellowship training in orthopedic foot and ankle surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, under the guidance of Dr. James Brodsky. Additionally, he has published peer-reviewed studies and textbook chapters. He also serves as an editor for multiple orthopedic journals. Furthermore, he remains active in the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He also mentors students in the Texas Joint Admission Program for Medical School.

Dedicated to the Houston community, Dr. Wetzig takes an individualized and goal-oriented approach to care. Above all, he listens first. His research focuses on lower extremity trauma outcomes, biologic enhancement of foot and ankle arthrodesis, deformity correction, and medical education.

He is currently seeing patients at Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital.
