Biography

Dr. Matthew Harting is an Associate Professor at McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, in the Department of Pediatric Surgery. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery, pediatric surgery and surgical critical care.  A Texas native, Dr. Harting grew up in the Austin area and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin in the Dean’s Scholars Honors program in the College of Natural Sciences. He received his medical degree, as well as a master of science in clinical research, from the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, and completed his surgical residency at the University of Michigan. During his surgical training, he completed NIH T32 and T15 sponsored clinical, translational, and basic science research fellowships in adult stem cell therapies and trauma. An additional post-graduate fellowship was completed in Pediatric Surgery at the University of Washington Seattle Children’s Hospital and he completed a Surgical Critical Care fellowship at the McGovern Medical School, the Red Duke Trauma Institute, and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Dr. Harting’s clinical interests include congenital and acquired thoracic disease, including pulmonary, diaphragmatic, and esophageal disease. He has particular interest in patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). He also has interest in minimally invasive surgery and extracorporeal life support (ECLS or ECMO). Dr. Harting is the medical director of the pediatric ECLS program and the director of the Comprehensive Center for CDH Care.

Dr. Harting is a clinical and basic-translational scientist with interests in congenital cardiopulmonary disease, stem cell biology, hypoxia, and inflammation. His primary research is focused on congenital diaphragmatic hernia and the concomitant cardiopulmonary pathophysiology. He is investigating novel, cell-based therapies as treatment strategies for congenital pulmonary disease. Additionally, he is involved in the Center for Surgical Trials and Evidence Based Practice.
