Rex Marco, MD, is a professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston (external link) and director of the Orthopaedic Spine Fellowship.
As an orthopedic spine surgeon, Dr. Marco specializes in treating complex spinal disorders. He works closely with specialists in oncology, pathology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and physical therapy to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care. His collaborative approach helps patients receive coordinated treatment tailored to their individual needs.
Dr. Marco is also an educator, researcher and national advocate for patients with spinal cord injuries and disabilities. Following a life-changing spinal cord injury, he has become a leading voice for disability inclusion, resilience and compassionate care in medicine. He frequently speaks to medical professionals, students and community audiences about the physician-patient experience and the importance of empathy in health care.
In addition to his clinical and educational leadership, Dr. Marco has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and scientific presentations. His work has advanced the fields of spine surgery, musculoskeletal oncology and orthopedic education while helping train the next generation of orthopedic surgeons.
