In the fast-paced world of orthopedic care, much of the work that keeps us moving forward happens behind the scenes. On Administrative Professionals Day, we’re shining a light on one of our strongest support systems — they’re the team that makes sure everything works. Whether booking travel, processing reimbursements, logging mileage, managing vendors, or handling invoices, Amy, Jo Ann, Afton, and Alex take care of the details that keep the entire department running smoothly. These professionals work tirelessly to ensure our faculty, staff, and students are supported every step of the way. Their impact is immense, and their dedication does not go unnoticed.

What stands out most about this team is their shared passion for service and excellence. For Amy Kurtz, it all comes down to the people. “It might sound cliché,” she says, “but our department’s support, teamwork, and professionalism make every day more productive—and enjoyable.”

Afton Tutson echoes this sentiment, bringing her love for service and learning to the role. “No two days are the same, and I love that,” she says. “We interact with so many moving parts—clinic managers, accounts payable, the travel team, vendors—and our work plays a vital role in keeping everything running.” Afton has processed nearly 1,200 reimbursements and over 1,000 invoices in just over a year. That’s no small feat!

Jo Ann Monroe thrives on supporting others and solving problems. “I enjoy being able to serve and support others—especially when I get to collaborate with my coworkers to make the process smoother for everyone involved,” she shared.

“There’s a lot more behind-the-scenes problem-solving than most people realize,” Jo Ann says. “But I’ve learned how to adapt and stay grounded, especially during those early growing pains. Overcoming those challenges has been one of my proudest moments.”

Across the board, the team credits their success to structure, communication, and teamwork. Regular meetings, daily to-do lists, and a shared commitment to helping one another are some of the ways they stay on top of countless moving parts. “This role requires flexibility and attention to detail,” says Afton. “If something doesn’t get done, I take it hard—I never want to let anyone down.” They rely on each other, no matter what.

They also find strength in rituals that keep them grounded. From Amy’s daily list of ten tasks to Afton’s early-morning coffee restocks and prayerful mindset, and Jo Ann’s rejuvenating power naps—these moments of intention fuel their day. “Everything is better with coffee,” (I personally agree with that 100%–Thank you, Afton). She smiles, “and every item crossed off my list means someone’s been helped.”

Their pride in their work shines through, whether it’s being recognized as a model for training, adapting through challenges, or simply hearing “thank you” from colleagues. These moments remind them—and all of us—why their role matters.

As we celebrate the dedication of Amy, Afton, and Jo Ann, we are also excited to welcome a new face to the team: Alejandra Hernandez. We are thrilled to have her on board and look forward to the great contributions she’ll bring to this already dynamic and accomplished team. Alex’s talents and energy are the perfect addition to this incredible crew.

Alex shared, “I’m so happy to be part of this team. Everyone has been so supportive, and I already feel like I’m learning so much. It’s amazing to be surrounded by people who truly care about their work and each other.”

To Amy, Afton, Jo Ann, and Alex—thank you for all you do. You’re the reason things run as smoothly as they do around here. Your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed, and today we celebrate you, our go-to team for all things travel, reimbursement, and the million little details in between.

Happy Administrative Professionals Day!
